The American landing at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944 in Normandy
On June 6, 1944, Omaha Beach was one of five beach sectors designated for the Allied landings in Normandy during Operation Overlord . This section of beach, extending approximately 8 kilometers from Sainte-Honorine-des-Pertes to Vierville-sur-Mer, was assigned to American troops to create a link between the British landings at Gold Beach to the east and the British landings Americans at Utah Beach to the west
Omaha Beach Areas
Omaha Beach was divided into several areas: Dog Green, Dog White, Dog Red, Easy Green, Easy Red, Fox Green and Fox Red. Each of these sectors had different geographic characteristics and levels of German defense, which influenced landing strategies and results ( Wikipedia )( DDay Overlord ).
- Dog Green : This sector, facing Vierville-sur-Mer, was the scene of some of the most intense fighting. The German defense there was extremely strong, and American troops suffered heavy losses trying to break through the defenses.
- Dog White : These sectors also saw heavy fighting, but the troops managed to establish penetration points despite numerous losses.
- Easy Red : These sectors were assigned to the 1st Infantry Division. Here too, the fighting was intense, with numerous obstacles and heavy fire from German positions.
- Fox Green : These sectors, located east of Easy Red, were also heavily defended. Coordination and armor support were crucial to advancing in these areas.
